Building Dreams Group

Meet Jarrett Drake of Graham Jones Design.

As the Mornington Peninsula continues its second lockdown, it is more important than ever that we maintain the sense of connection our local community is famous for! This is where ‘Behind the Dreams’ comes in. We’ll be meeting our vibrant, local building and design industry professionals for 10 fun, quick-fire questions.

Jarrett Drake – Director of Graham Jones Design.

Tell us about you! What brought you to the Mornington Peninsula?

Jarrett: I’m actually a Melbourne boy, born and bred. After taking over Graham Jones Design, I discovered that it’s 30 year history on the Mornington Peninsula was too strong a pull, and have since returned to the brands original connection to the Peninsula community again. Looking to setting up our new office in Mornington in 2021….fingers crossed!

How do you like to live?

Jarrett: “Live what you love” is probably the best description I can give. A simple love of a beer, football and my family & friends, and just living a simple tree change life. Design and creating exciting homes for clients to enjoy and express themselves is the cherry on top. That smile from the client on the day when the builder hands over is something that can’t be substituted, and has makes it all worthwhile.

What’s the highlight of your working week?

Jarrett: When a client is truly excited about their project but doesn’t know how to make it happen and then we can help them realise this dream at the same time building a relationship with each and everyone of them. This is what is most satisfying for me. That phone call from the client saying “I knew you would sort that for me…or….thanks Jarrett I would never have thought of that” is what gives you the belief in what you do.

Describe your business in 20 words 😉, no more!

Jarrett: We are a boutique design company that create contemporary timeless designs that allows a client to live in a home that reflects their individuality. We “Design for Life”.

What do you do on a Saturday?

Jarrett: There is never a shortage of chores to be done living on acreage and especially living with a wife and daughters who love horses. But just generally soaking in the fresh air and especially during this COVID period, I must admit I certainly appreciate where I live to have that freedom to relax by the firepit on a Saturday afternoon with a cold beer.

What’s your favourite house or garden trend at the moment?

Jarrett: I think from our point of view, we take great pride in trying to create a timeless aesthetic. A minimalist approach will always provide that, but our conscious effort with design at the moment, regardless of style, is to use traditional materials in a more creative way. Renders and light weight claddings still have their place, but not at the expense of longevity and reliability as a building material. I want our buildings to be around for decades to come.

Your proudest business moment?

Jarrett: Not unlike the many successful projects we have completed, in business, creating something bigger than yourself, which enables others (my employees) to realise their dreams in creating life lasting moments. The ability for them to be proud of their work and be able to point to a house and say…”I designed that”.

What do you secretly wish clients knew?

Jarrett: Our quality of service is paramount to us, as the journey can sometimes be a challenging one for our clients and as they may not have the experience or understand the challenges, communication through this is key. Their experience through their project is the best recommendation you can have. So if they only knew the 100’s of conversations you may have in the background, or the dozens of sketches you may produce considering all the different challenges that a site or project may present, the time it takes to properly consider and produce and then present may be better appreciated. So clearly communicating and educating our clients through the process is an important piece of the puzzle.

If you were a house… which one would you be? And why?

Jarrett: Barcelona Pavilion by Mies Van der Rohe. Simple, robust and ahead of it’s time!

Thank you Jarrett for sharing a bit about yourself with our Building Dreams community!
